Yarn Opinions: Mission Falls 1824 Cotton

Yarn: Mission Falls 1824 Cotton
Information from here , here, and yarn label
Content: 100% Cotton
Amount: 84 yards per 50 gram ball
Gauge: 18 sts over 4 inches on size US 7 needles
Price: $5.45/skein at my local yarn shop
Colour: 405 Phlox (purple) and 404 1/4 Indigo (blue).
Project: Bunny Hop Side Wrap Kimono

  • Reality check gauge: Um, yeah, I forgot to check this before I mailed the sweater & hat off. I think it was 18 sts over 4 inches on US 7 Needles
  • One good thing: This yarn is very soft and machine washable. Basically, it seems to be the perfect baby yarn.
  • One bad thing: Like I would expect with any cotton yarn, there is no stretch to this yarn. My hands got tired after a long period of knitting with 1824 Cotton.
  • One odd thing: The purple was considerably softer and not as tightly spun as the blue. I bought the purple last summer and the blue in December. I think that Mission Falls discontinued production while they switched to a different mill about a year ago. I wonder if the purple is from the old mill and the blue from the new mill? I had no problems with either colour, but I found it odd that there was that difference.
  • Did the cats like the yarn? They didn't care one way or another. Willow did try and play with it a little bit, but I never caught Alex taking a nap on it.
  • Would you use this yarn again? Yes, certainly for any future baby items. I'm not sure I'd knit an entire sweater for myself with it as it would be pretty heavy (I don't like that heavy cotton sweater feel).
If you've used 1824 Cotton, please feel free to post your opinion in the comments section.
