Yarn Opinions: Cascade 220

Yarn: Cascade 220
Information from the Cascade website and yarn label:
Content: 100% Peruvian highland wool
Amount: 220 yards/100 grams
Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch on US #8 / 5 stitches per inch on US #7
Price: $6.50 at my local yarn store
Project: My first sweater, cat sweater, a vest and some felted slippers
  • Reality check gauge: 4.5 stitches/inch on US 9 needles
  • One good thing: This yarn is inexpensive and worked very well for the first sweater that I made. There was very little pilling and the sweater has worn very well over the past 4 years. For basic worsted wool, I can't say I'd use anything else.
  • One bad thing: Maybe I just got a bad batch, but it seems that some colors are softer/less scratchy than others. The green from my first sweater was rather scratchy, whereas the pink I used for the cat sweater and the black for my vest is pretty soft (not soft enough I'd wear it right against my skin though)
  • You've said before that you like Wool of the Andes for felting, how does Cascade 220 felt? I've made 3 pairs of felted slippers in Cascade 220. It took 4 cycles for one pair to felt and 3 for the other two pairs of slippers. Wool of the Andes never takes more than 2 cycles (usually about 1.5) in my front loader. Both yarns work well for felting and I would happily use Cascade 220 instead of Wool of the Andes if I didn't feel like placing a Knit Picks order. I just happen to like the fact that Wool of the Andes felts faster. This doesn't relate to felting, but in my opinion, Cascade 220 is generally a softer yarn than Wool of the Andes, that combined with the bigger skeins, I'd rather use Cascade 220 for a sweater/other non felted project.
  • Would you use this yarn again? Yes, yes yes. I will probably do another sweater from Cascade 220 in the next few years and it might also creep into my felting projects or anything else that I want inexpensive wool for.
