Yarn Opinions: Karabella Aurora 8

Yarn: Karabella Aurora 8
Information from the Karabella website and yarn label:
Content: 100% Extrafine Meriono wool
Amount: 98 yards/50 grams
Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch on US #8 / 5 stitches per inch on US #7
Price: $8.75 at my local yarn store
Project: Husband's box stitch scarf
  • Reality check gauge: It's a scarf, I didn't really care. On US 8's, I had about 5 stitches per inch in my pattern.
  • One good thing: Aurora 8 is super duper soft. If you don't like scratchy wool, this has no scratch to it what-so-ever. It's also rather fluffy and stretchy, but it wasn't so stretchy that it bothered me, it just made it easier to work with. I just found my new favorite yarn.
  • One bad thing: At $8.75 per 98 yard skein and 3 skeins required for a scarf ($26.25 total), this yarn just might break the bank.
  • How does Aurora 8 compare to Knit Picks Merino Style? I'm going to ignore that Aurora 8 is about 4 times more expensive than Merino Style and a different weight (DK vs Worsted). They both have no wool scratch (much softer than you'd think "wool" should be), however, the fluffy/stretchy aspect of Aurora 8 would win me over any day. Merino Style is much denser and not quite as stretchy, it would feel like working with a cotton blend compared to Aurora 8 (even though it's not).
  • Would you use this yarn again? I'd love to, but I can't imagine spending the money to make anything big, like a sweater (which would be around $100). Maybe wrist warmers or a scarf for me. I think I'll be watching e-bay for enough to make a sweater....

Aurora 8 is a fabulous yarn. I've used it for several sweaters. It wears well unlike a lot of merino yarn; it's easy to knit with, and has a hand not easily comparable to other yarns in this category. This yarn is a good value because of its merit.
